Self Portraits
The drawing class first took photographs of everyone in the class
and printed them. Students then placed a transparent grid over the photograph
and drew a larger grid on a piece of drawing paper. (The ratio ends up being
about 1:2) They then placed a translucent piece of vellum over their drawn grid
and proceeded to enlarge their image. By drawing their portrait square by square,
students are able to retain proportion and break down the image to just lines
in relation to each other and the sides of the squares. This aids the brain
by eliminating “survival” vision and forcing the students to see
the basic elements in each portion. Once the outline is completed, students
remove the grid and work on shading.
