Civil War maps from the Library of Congress American Memory Collection. This site brings together maps from the Library of Congress Geography and Map Division, the Library of Virginia, and the Virginia Historical Society.
Michigan State University Libraries: Map Library
Michigan State University has a well-known geography department, and an excellent map library. The library's web site offers a good selection of digital exhibits and maps. You can click on "Printable Maps" and find boundary maps for the entire world and the continents.
National Geographic Atlas
You will need to enter our User ID (worldatlas) and our Password (7 continents). This will give you access to the Internet version of the National Geographic World Atlas which includes not only maps but also textual and photographic information on a wide variety of topics in physical and cultural geography.
Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection
The web site of the Map Collection at the Library of the University of Texas at Austin. This is a fantastic site. One of my favorites. Includes historical maps of all types: geographic, topographic, and thematic.
Yale University Library: The Map Collection
Yale has a wide-ranging map collection that is easy to browse. Sections include "Maps of the World", "Maps of the Western Hemisphere", "Maps of North America", "Maps Relating to the Silk Road", and "Maps of Africa".

Prints and Photographs Reading Room/Library of Congress
An astonishing collection of over 13.7 million images, including photographs, fine and popular prints and drawings, posters, and architectural and engineering drawings. The collections are international in scope, but particularly rich in materials documenting the history of the United States and the lives, interests and achievements of the American people. Searchable by keyword. While most image sites charge a fee, this one does not.
NYPL Digital Gallery
Free and open access to over 275,000 images digitized from the New York Public Library collections, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, and vintage posters. The site is organized into sections covering the arts and literature, architecture, urban studies, culture and society, history and geography, industry and technology, nature and science, printing and graphics.
The NYPL Picture Collection Online
The New York Public Library Picture Collection Online is an image resource site with over 30,000 digitized images from books, magazines and newspapers as well as original photographs, prints and postcards, mostly created before 1923.
Picture History
A digital library of high quality images and footage documenting 200 years of American history. Search by period, topic, or person. Images are available for purchase, licensing, or sending as free e-cards. The "Picture History" logo will be overlaid on images reproduced from the web site. Kunhardt Productions.
Smithsonian Images
Selected images from current exhibits, Smithsonian events and historic collections. Topics include Air and Space, American History, Animals, Gems and Minerals, History of Technology, Marine Life, Military History, Nature, the Presidency, and Transportation. The Smithsonian encourages the use, without charge, of these images by students, teachers, and schools. They are available for downloading and use in reports and class work, as well as on class-related student and school web sites. Credit must be given to the photographer and the Smithsonian Institution. In addition, individual photographic prints in a variety of sizes are also available for purchase through this Photographic Services web site.
