Animal Diversity Web
This is one of my go-to sites for research about animals of all types: mammals, birds, fishes, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. Includes information about habitat and behavior.

BBC Nature/Wildlife
My new favorite web site for animal research. This site includes background information, images, video clips, and news articles about animals of all types. Enjoy!

Enature.com
An online field guide for nature and wildlife information. The site's core content of wildlife information covers nearly 6,000 species. This is the same data set used to create the printed Audubon Filed Guides and all the data has been reviewed by scientists.

Encyclopedia of Life
A free online global collaborative encyclopedia intended to document all of the 1.9 million named species of animals, plants and other forms of life on earth. Includes species overviews, maps, and various media (images, sounds, and video).

Journey North: A Global Study of Animal Migration and Seasonal Change
This site from Annenberg Learner is full of information, pictures, slide shows, and video clips and chances to participate in research.

Nat Geo Wild: Animals
This site from National Geographic includes facts, maps, images and videos on animals from A to Z. The scope is not as comprehensive as the BBC site or Animal Diversity Web, but there is much useful information.

Nova: Nature
An excellent new beta site filled with text, images and multimedia coverage of animals.

Many animals have a selection of sites devoted specifically to them. Be sure to check on the reliability of the site and verify that the information is scholarly, accurate, current, and unbiased. See, for example:

Many photographs are copyright protected. Be sure to check that the images you use are in the public domain. This means you are free to download and use them. Remember to cite images in your research the way you cite any other source.

AHRC is a tool for art historical research on the Internet. It shares key resources and methods of online research so that art historians can find the resources relevant to their work.

Art History Resources on the Web
A comprehensive art history portal from Sweetbriar College. Provides a gateway to resources on art history from ancient times to the present day. There are links to research resources, an extensive list of museums and galleries by country, online journals, exhibits, and university art departments. Time periods are divided into countries, cultures, and styles. Individual artists are also included.

Artcyclopedia: The Fine Art Search Engine
This site's mission is "to become the definitive and most effective guide to museum-quality fine art on the Internet." It currently represents the work of over 8,000 artists with over 150,000 images, and provides links to over 2,000 sites.

National Gallery of Art Databases and Links

Smithsonian Archives of American Art
The Archives of American Art is a compilation of over 5,000 collections pertaining to the visual arts throughout American history. The Archive is comprised of "letters, diaries, sketches and sketchbooks, photographs, exhibition catalogs, scrapbooks, business records, art periodicals, and other types of documents" totaling 14 million items. The web site offers an online catalog to the collections as well as numerous online exhibits.

Timeline of Art History, Metropolitan Museum of Art
Extending from prehistory to the present day, the timeline is, " a chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of the history of art from around the world, as illustrated especially by the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection." The timeline includes subject and artist indexes, as well as a search function. It also includes maps, and lists key events in history. High quality images can be enlarged. A spectacular site. Useful for many classes.

Library of Congress Performing Arts Encyclopedia
A guide to the performing arts collections and exhibits from the Library of Congress. Collection subjects include dance (ballet and modern dance), music (such as instruments, chamber music, and jazz), opera, theater, radio and television, vaudeville, and blacks and women in the performing arts. Browse by subject or person.

The Spolin Center

Primary sources from Duke University's Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Digital History
This impressive site from Professor Steven Mintz at the University of Houston includes an up-to-date U.S. history textbook; annotated primary sources on United States, Mexican American, and Native American history, and slavery; and succinct essays on the history of ethnicity and immigration, film, private life, and science and technology. Visual histories of Lincoln's America and America's Reconstruction contain text by Eric Foner and Olivia Mahoney. The Doing History feature lets users reconstruct the past through the voices of children, gravestones, advertising, and other primary sources. Reference resources include classroom handouts, chronologies, encyclopedia articles, glossaries, and an audio-visual archive including speeches, book talks and e-lectures by historians, and historical maps, music, newspaper articles, and images. The site's Ask the HyperHistorian feature allows users to pose questions to professional historians.

Documenting the American South
From the Library of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Primary resources for the study of Southern history, literature, and culture. This is a digital publishing initiative that provides Internet access to texts, images, and audio files related to southern history, literature, and culture. Currently DocSouth includes ten thematic collections of books, diaries, posters, artifacts, letters, oral history interviews, and songs.

Encyclopedia of the Second World War
The Second World War is a Spartacus Educational website and enables students to research individual people and events of the war in detail. The sources are "hypertexted" so that you can research the newspaper, organization, etc., that produced the source. There are numerous subsections including Background to the War; Nazi Germany, Chronology of the War, Political Leaders, European Diplomacy, Major Offensives, British Military Leaders, USA Military Leaders, German Military Leaders, Japanese Military Leaders, The Armed Forces, The Air War, The Resistance, Scientists & Inventors, War at Sea, Resistance in Nazi Germany, The Holocaust, War Artists, Weapons and New Technology.

France in America/France en Amérique
A bilingual web site created by the Library of Congress and the Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris. It explores the history of the French presence in North America from the first decades of the 16th century to the end of the 19th century. The site provides direct digital access to complete books, maps, prints, and other documents from the collections of the partner libraries. The project illuminates two major themes in the history of relations between France and the United States: the role played by France in the exploration and settlement of the continent and its participation in several events which indelibly marked the history of the United States: the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the Louisiana Purchase.

HyperWar: World War II
Hyper War is a "hypertext" history of the second World War and features diplomatic and political documents. The content is made up primarily of "public domain" materials in English: official government histories (United States and British Commonwealth/Empire); source documents (diplomatic messages, action reports, logs, diaries, etc.); and primary references (manuals, glossaries, etc).

Jazz Age Culture
A web portal from Pittsburg State University (Kansas) on all aspects of the jazz age culture of the 1920s and 1930s.

Lewis and Clark
An excellent companion web site to the PBS special "Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery."

Library of Congress
An outstanding and invaluable site for American history and general studies. Contains primary and secondary documents, exhibits, map collections, prints and photographs, sound recordings and motion pictures. The LOC's American Memory Historical Collections, a must-see, contains the bulk of digitalized materials, but the Exhibitions Gallery is enticing and informative as well. The LOC also offers a Learning Page that provides activities, tools, ideas, and features for educators and students.

Library of Congress American Memory 
"American Memory provides free and open access through the Internet to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience. It is a digital record of American history and creativity. These materials, from the collections of the Library of Congress and other institutions, chronicle historical events, people, places, and ideas that continue to shape America, serving the public as a resource for education and lifelong learning."

Lincoln/Net
Abraham Lincoln Historical Digitization Project from Northern Illinois University and the Illinois State Library. Lincoln/Net presents historical materials from Abraham Lincoln's Illinois years (1830-1861), including Lincoln's writings and speeches, as well as other materials regarding antebellum Illinois.

The Making of America Project/University of Michigan and The Making of America Project/Cornell University
Making of America is a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. The collection currently contains approximately 9,500 books and 100,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints. The project represents a major collaborative endeavor in preservation and electronic access to historical texts. Making of America is made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute

U.S. Historical Documents 
Although this one's a little tidier and more professional looking than the AMDOCS site, it isn't quite as comprehensive. I think I'd still go here first. It's an amazing resource for American history. The University of Oklahoma College of Law site "A Chronology of U.S. Historical Documents," provides the full text of thousands of documents such as Frederick Douglass's eloquent 1867 Appeal to Congress for Impartial Suffrage.

The Valley of the Shadow
This site is produced by Edward L. Ayers of the University of Virginia and focuses on two communities in the Civil War.

The War for Vietnam
A Vassar College site providing access to documents and links regarding the Vietnam War. This site grew out of a senior seminar on the Vietnam War and offers students an opportunity to examine some primary sources, including numerous official documents. Brigham was the first American scholar given access to the Vietnamese archives on the war in Hanoi. Included here are his translations of some of the Hanoi documents, offered for examination and study.

World War I Document Archive
This archive of primary documents from World War I has been assembled by volunteers of the World War I Military History List. It is international in focus and intends to present in one location primary documents concerning the Great War.

Michigan State University Libraries: Map Library
Michigan State University has a well-known geography department, and an excellent map library. The library's web site offers a good selection of digital exhibits and maps. You can click on "Printable Maps" and find boundary maps for the entire world and the continents.

National Geographic Atlas
You will need to enter our User ID (worldatlas) and our Password (7 continents). This will give you access to the Internet version of the National Geographic World Atlas which includes not only maps but also textual and photographic information on a wide variety of topics in physical and cultural geography.

Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection
The web site of the Map Collection at the Library of the University of Texas at Austin. This is a  fantastic site. One of my favorites. Includes historical maps of all types: geographic, topographic, and thematic.

An astonishing collection of over 13.7 million images, including photographs, fine and popular prints and drawings, posters, and architectural and engineering drawings. The collections are international in scope, but particularly rich in materials documenting the history of the United States and the lives, interests and achievements of the American people. Searchable by keyword. While most image sites charge a fee, this one does not.

NYPL Digital Gallery
Free and open access to over 275,000 images digitized from the New York Public Library collections, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, and vintage posters. The site is organized into sections covering the arts and literature, architecture, urban studies, culture and society, history and geography, industry and technology, nature and science, printing and graphics.

The NYPL Picture Collection Online 
The New York Public Library Picture Collection Online is an image resource site with over 30,000 digitized images from books, magazines and newspapers as well as original photographs, prints and postcards, mostly created before 1923.

Picture History
A digital library of high quality images and footage documenting 200 years of American history. Search by period, topic, or person. Smithsonian Images
Selected images from current exhibits, Smithsonian events and historic collections. Gods and goddesses from many cultures have been used to describe heavenly bodies like the sun, moon and planets. Buddhist Studies WWW Virtual Library
The Buddhist Studies WWW Virtual Library is one of those sites you wish were available for every religion. It is well organized and classified and locating specific informational sites is easy. There are links within the pages to the WWW Virtual Libraries for "Pure Land Buddhism," "Tibetan Studies," and "Zen Buddhism." There is also a link to a Theravada Buddhist InfoWeb.

The Hindu Universe
Probably the largest and best single site on Hinduism on the Internet, the Hindu Universe provides links to more than 17,000 sites. The resource directory offers a helpful organization framework for finding resources related to such topics as scriptures, god, worship, philosophy, customs, history, and interfaith relations. The Hindu Universe is a project of the Hindu Students Council and is the Web site for the Global Hindu Electronic Networks. 
 
The Internet Sacred Text Archive
This nonprofit site is the single largest religious text archive on the Internet. The content is broad, including religion, mythology, legend, folklore, occult, and esoteric topics. The topical listing of religious materials has 46 categories, not only dealing with the standards such as Jainism but also unusual topics such as Piri Re'is Map, Shamanism, and Tantra.

The Islam Page
The name says it all; this is the page to go to for finding information on Islam. Near the top of the page, one has the opportunity to read the Qur'an in any of more than 20 different languages. Qur'an. There are large subject areas of links, which include beliefs of Islam, Muslim character, comparative religion, and Islamic history. There are 20 pages of links on this site.

Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations
The Macdonald Center is an academic unit within Hartford Seminary dedicated to scholarly research, teaching and publication. It is responsible for the Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations Master of Arts program, a Graduate Certificate in Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations, the Islamic Chaplaincy program, the Ph.D. program in Islamic Studies and numerous global study tours. This site includes information about Islam, the text of the Muslim World Journal, articles, lectures, and reviews by Macdonald Center faculty, and selected web links.

Religious Worlds
An information source for religious studies, this site offers information about religious traditions that developed in the Middle East or West Asia as well as others from South and East Asia.

Resources for the Study of Buddhism 
If you need a gateway to general Buddhism resources, this one from Ron Epstein of San Francisco State University is a good choice. The site points to such places as other general resources on Buddhism, sites for Theravada Buddhism teachings, sites for Mahayana Buddhism teachings, sites on Buddhism and science, and online collections of Buddhist texts.

Excellent portal site providing extensive links related to all things Quaker.

Digital Quaker Collection
DQC is a digital library containing full text and page images of over 500 individual Quaker works from the 17th and 18th centuries. Searchable by author or title. Also includes links to related sites. From the Earlham School of Religion, Richmond, Indiana.

American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)
A Quaker organization, organized in the "belief in the worth of every person, and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice." Find newspaper and magazine articles relating to issues of social and economic justice, such as the plight of civilians of Afghanistan and Iraq. Volunteer opportunities are also highlighted. American Friends Service Committee: Youth & Militarism 
Questions and answers from this Quaker organization "committed to the principles of nonviolence," about military recruitment issues facing American youth. This report presents the debate over drilling for oil on the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge [ANWR] that has gone on for over a decade. Atlas of the Biosphere
A database produced by the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment and designed for high school and college students. The Maps section contains geographically explicit data broken down into four general categories: Humans, Land Use, Ecosystems, and Water Resources. This is a great general source for Internet accessible information made available by the Center for International Earth Science Information Network, an organization established by Congress to study global environmental change and human interaction with the environment. This includes information prepared by CIESIN and also links to other sources. Among the sources prepared by CIESIN are thematic guides to current issues. Also accessible are education related and other information resources. The entire site is searchable by keyword.

Natural Resources Defense Council
NRDC is an environmental action organization whose mission is "to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things." A section of its web site is devoted to United States environmental law and policy.

NET: National Environmental Trust
National Environmental Trust is a non-profit, non-partisan organization established in 1994 to inform citizens about environmental problems and how they affect our health and quality of life. It discusses topics such as Clean Air, Global Warming, Energy, Forests, Marine Life and Habitats and Environmental Health.

NOAA Earth Observing System
