Filmmaking: A Self-Portrait

Did you ever imagine making a movie about yourself — your likes and dislikes? Using meaningful images set to your favorite music, your personal film project will be created within Tandem’s new MacLab. You will be using a wide variety of software including: Imovie, Photo-
booth, and Garage Band to create your self-portrait film. A CD with all your work is yours to share with your family and friends. (1,2,3)

Speak With Your Hands

Come discover the art, beauty and fun of signing. Learn to speak with your hands and have silent conversations with your friends. Not only will you learn finger spelling, numbers, and basic vocabulary, but you will also learn to use facial expression and body language to enhance your communication. (1,2,3)

Fun with French

Parlez-vous français? You will after this session exploring the language, culture and yummy foods of France! Learn more about French language and culture
as we play games, watch videos, sing songs and cook food from French-speaking countries. Put this learning into practice as you communicate with your very own French penpal.Learn what life is like in another part of the world—and have fun in the process! (2,3)

Commedia Dell’ Arte

Dive into the world of comedy as we explore the different characters of the Commedia Dell' Arte, from desperate passionate lovers to stingy miserly old men, and then learn how these characters are in our everyday world. Bring comfortable clothes for movement, come ready to play, and show off your comical edge! (1,2)
The Jig is Up/Irish Dance

Whether you are new to dance or have studied other dance forms, this class will give you a unique perspective on rhythm and music through the study of traditional Irish folk stepdance including reels, jigs, and slip jigs. We will also explore percussive forms of stepdance that have made Riverdance so popular (1,2,3)

Samurai Sword Arts

Learn the ancient sword arts of the Samurai warriors! In this class you will learn the basic cuts and lines of parry for Kendo, the sword fighting art of the Samurai, as well as basic sword kata. We will also delve into the mystery of the Bushido code and explore exactly who the Samurai were and learn about their philosophy that still impacts Japanese culture to this day. (2,3)

In Your Face

Are you feeling powerful? Invisible? Charismatic? Whatever it is, we’ll find a way to put it on paper. From Van Gogh to Chuck Close we will learn about the history of self-portraiture and the awesome and eclectic forms it can take. We will then do a series of our own self-portraits exploring the many ways to represent ourselves through paint and sculpture from physical to emotional to intellectual. (1,2,3)

Creative Cross-Stitch

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to "paint with thread"? When you learn counted cross-stitch, you can create beautiful color pictures by simply using a needle and embroidery floss! Come learn the basics of this traditional needlecraft and then design and stitch your own "painting in thread"! The only limit is your imagination! (2,3)

Design In Wood

Take your imagination and build an amazing project with wood. Make a wooden box to put your treasures in. Do you need to organize your desk? Make a custom design for all your supplies, and stash pencils, remotes, highlighters and pens. Build a model of a car or boat. Start planning your project today, and build it in July. (Session 2 only)

Landscape Painting

Working as the french say "en plein aire" (outside), we will learn to paint the world around us from observation. Using acrylic paint and canvas board, we will practice capturing sunlight on trees, shadows on green fields, mountains off in the distance, and everything else you see out there. Come ready to put aside your ideas of what nature looks like and to closely observe our beautiful countryside. (1,2,3)

Journaling: A Book of Your Own

This class will be devoted to exploring the creative joys of journaling. Armed with a blank book, we will explore many different possibilities for journal writing—incorporating our own combinations of free writing, art, lists, artist walks and poetry. Fill the pages of your own book of life while you learn to enjoy a ritual you can continue forever. (2,3)

Books, Pages, Images, Words
Lynn Ramsson
Make all sorts of creative decisions while learning different ways to build, decorate, and fill your own book. You decide how traditional you would like your book to appear, or you may experiment with an alternative structure or a unique font or whatever else interests you. Bring to class bits of writing that have stayed with you,or bring in your own original work to fill your pages, or leave some blank for later imaginings. If you like reading books, chances are you will love designing and making them. (2,3)

Sign Choir

Perhaps you have experienced “singing” in a choir before but have you ever experienced “signing” in a choir before? Discover the art, beauty and fun of signing a song. Learn to sign in unison to some of your favorite songs. You will also learn to use facial expression and body language to express your silent voice! (Session 2 only)

Claymation Animation

Let’s help the Spectrum film crew make an animated film by creating clay critters complete with props, a storyline and imaginary set. Imagine the setting where your critters live, and what kind of activity your critter can perform with its moveable parts. Can they drive a car,
climb a fence, play jump rope? (1,2)

Fencing: the Original Extreme Sport

Swashbucklers wanted! Come learn the art of fencing, the original extreme sport. Follow its growth from the ancient art of the duel and a skill of war to its modern form of a fast and exciting sport! This course will teach the basics of this exciting sport as well as its history and evolution from ancient times to the modern day. The class will finish with a fencing tournament complete with electric scoring gear and weapons in the modern style. (Sessions 2,3 only)
Loaner gear is provided. Optional: Fencing gear may be purchased for $160.

Box City Studio
Create a sound stage complete with cameras, sound booth, display screens and set designs all out of boxes as you develop the programming for Spectrum’s first CNN—Cardboard National Network. You are the on-the-spot reporters, screen writers, news anchors, station managers, meteorologists, advertisers, film crew & celebrities. W.B.O.X. TV coming soon to your local station! (Session 1 only)

Marbleworks
In the spirit of Rube Goldberg, explore the twists and turns of engineering a larger than life “marblework” of slopes, fulcrums and spirals, designed to take a “marble” from one end to the other through intricate channels of box sculpted pipes & aqueducts. As the architect, you will create drawings and a miniature model of your very own unique design to propose for the final gargantuan masterpiece. Put on your hard-hat and be ready for some wacky fun with marbles! (Session 3 only)

Sherri and Bryan will be your “guides on the side” as you explore the archi-tecture, programming, designs, drawings, writings and games related to each of these unique projects.

We will be asking parents to save creative materials like large pieces of cardboard or boxes of any size, ....especially cereal & shoe boxes this year
(i.e. left-over house paint, fabric, yarn, mailing tubes, rope, styrofoam packing shapes (please, no peanuts!) and other crafty throw-aways ).
