Tandem Friends School's unique and dynamic Middle School film program continues to grow and to produce award-winning films. Digital film classes begin in the digital film lab, complete with state-of-the-art iMac computers and software such as I-Stop Motion, Final Cut Pro and iMovie. The classes may start in the lab, but filmmaking takes place all over the campus, limited only by imagination.

In grades 7 and 8, students are immersed in all aspects of pre-production, production, and post production. Students learn how to create storyboards, become proficient with the camera, explore different lighting techniques, and edit on both iMovie and Final Cut Pro. Students script, shoot, edit, and produce their own films. Seventh grade students engage in a filmmaking unit, where they learn about, and create different genres of films to be screened by the Middle School at the end of the year. In 8th grade, students create public service announcements and short films about social and environmental issues that often highlight Quaker values in action. These films are submitted to the International Bridge Film Festival, hosted by Brooklyn Friends School. Middle School students who enter films in the Bridge Film Festival competition have won top prizes in the Festival over the years.

We have an active Movies that Matter group, a digital filmmaking club for both Upper School and Middle School students who are interested in making films that start conversations and call people to action about ideas and issues that matter. Students work together to create narrative and documentary films that have a message about social justice issues, stewardship, peace, community, and more. Film Club students often submit films to local and global film contests and screenings, and participate annually in the Virginia Film Festival's Young Filmmaker's Academy.

Alumni of the Tandem Friends film program have gone on to study at film programs at Interlochen, North Carolina School of the Arts, NYU film school and other university film programs, having films accepted to and winning awards at film festivals across the country.
