It was a busy week on campus, and one that brought some real winter cold with it. Last weekend our Upper School drama program presented a great production of
The Great Gatsby - see some photos below of the show. We held our November Admissions Information Session. Tandem parents had several events to attend - two college programs and a very informative parent program on Teens and Technology & Social Media, led by Dr. Nancy Deutsch, a UVA professor. Thanks to all who attended those programs. Dr. Deutsch, who spoke at the parent program on teens and technology last night also spoke to the Upper Schoolers in Speaker Series today on the same topic, but with a teen-based perspective. She very generously offered to share the presentation slides she used -

Middle Schoolers enjoyed the talents of 7th grade Drama students today as they presented their self-created Cafe 006-7 skits to great applause. 7th grade Music students started the performance off with two great songs. 5th graders are deep into and are busily working on their Fractured Fairytales Drama production. 6th graders are learning some fun physics lessons. 7th grade Spanish students had a lunchtime field trip to Al Carbon, and all 7th graders are learning about cell structure and fractions (details below). 8th graders staged a revolution of sorts (see details below) and 8th grade Musical Theatre students head into 'tech week' for their musical performance of Disney’s High School Musical, Jr., to be presented next Friday and Saturday nights. Details, including a ticket reservation link, are provided below.
In the Upper School, 50 students head to the UVA campus this weekend to represent Tandem as they compete in Model United Nations, led by teachers Melissa Winder and Alex Siragy - good luck, young diplomats. Science Olympiad team members are working furiously on projects for their December competition. The last college visit was held this week - we had representatives from 46 colleges and universities visit this fall to talk about their schools. 9th graders are well into Orwell's
1984. 10th graders are reading
Frankenstein and preparing to put Dr. Frankenstein on trial. 11th graders are reading
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and Senior Comp students are completing
Beowulf and creating boastful gielps (see details below). All enjoyed Community Time activities this week that focused on health and wellness topics such as digital life, hoaxes and fakes, problem solving, and decision making. The winter sports season is underway, with all teams practicing this week (except varsity track, which begins next week) and varsity basketball teams playing their first games next week.
