Ali Abdel-Rahman (TFS '16)

Ali Abdel-Rahman (TFS '16) is a third-year Global Security and Justice major and English Minor at UVA. He has been on campus a lot lately serving as a member of a Strategic Planning Committee Working Group on Supporting our Internal Constituencies. Here's what Ali shared with us:
"I am a third-year Global Security and Justice major and English Minor, if that matters, at UVA."

“To whom would that matter?”

“A very short list….Tucker, Nancy, my Mom…”

“What is Global Security and Justice?”

“Humanitarian matters…People moving across borders….anti-terrorism work…”

“How did you get interested in this?”

“As a Muslim, I have found our treatment and targeting of Muslims and Muslim countries annoying.  This would give me a chance to work with or in the Middle East/North Africa and make use of my English and Arabic.

How is Tandem part of your life now:  Tandem is where I started “applying myself” (as stupid as that sounds).

“How did that happen?” Teachers were different than they were at my public schools. They were open and willing to work with you and they knew how best to get you to apply yourselves."
