7th Grade Spanish Students Focus on Food and Connection
Victoria Bryant Torres
In 7th grade Spanish, students have been discussing the role of food as a social connector and also learning how to express preferences. They also learned about the history of some Mexican foods and their origins as well as the influence from other traditions and cultures. We also integrated some of our conversations with the Day of the Dead traditions, honored a passed loved one, and learned about the role of food in remembering what our loved ones enjoyed. On Thursday, we took a trip to Al Carbón where students ordered their food in Spanish and then stopped by McGuffey to get to see the Charlottesville community ofrendas (altars) honoring many people in a variety of ways. Students also had the chance to add to the community offering if they felt inspired to do so.
