Thank you for your interest in Tandem Friends School!
Tandem Friends School is a co-educational, independent day school for grades 5-12 with a diverse enrollment of 224 students. Founded as The Tandem School in 1970 and affiliated as a Quaker school in 1995, we are located on a 31-acre campus in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia. Our campus feels green and rural, yet we are a five-minute drive from Downtown Charlottesville. The school community feels similarly connected and protected: we are small enough that TFS feels like an extended family, yet we also prioritize using the world as our classroom, through service learning, outdoor experiences, field trips, and academic projects that take us into the wider community.
As a college preparatory school, we set high standards of academic excellence. We offer an impressive number of higher-level math and science courses. Our humanities curriculum focuses on teaching students to develop strong critical thinking and writing skills. Independent research is a hallmark of our program, beginning in grade five and continuing through the Senior Project. Our arts programming includes formal training in art, music, and theater, as well as informal opportunities to perform throughout the year.
Most importantly, at Tandem Friends, students learn how to be part of a vital and connected community.
The best way to understand the unique atmosphere and close-knit feel of Tandem Friends School is to visit us. Come tour our campus and visit classes. You will be inspired by the shared rapport between students and faculty, the comfortable, calm vibe of the campus, and the engaged learning evident in each classroom. Brandon Edwards
