iPad Policy

1:1 iPad Policy (grades 5 and 6)

Mission: To enhance the academic experience and to support the implementation of the middle school curricula.

Policy:
  • Do not engage in personal games, music, videos, or pictures.
  • Download apps only with faculty permission.
  • Video and audio recording and photography may be used for school assignments only.
  • No taking photos, videos, or recordings of any person without their permission.  Do not post photos, videos, or recordings of any type to the Internet without the consent of the people involved.
  • Teacher supervision is required for all iPad use at school, both during and outside of class.
  • The school-provided iPad case must be on at all times.
  • Do not pack the Tandem iPad in the same bag as water bottles and food.
  • Do not eat or drink while working on the iPad.
  • Do not borrow or use other people's school-owned iPads.
  • Students will be using school-issued Apple IDs to download applications and digital textbooks. Your Apple ID is your Tandem Friends email address.  All textbooks and a core set of applications will be purchased by the school and distributed to individual iPads via the Apple Device Enrollment Program.  Through this program, the apps are  ‘on loan’ from the school and will be returned automatically at the end of the school year. The iBook textbooks will belong to you and will be saved in the purchased apps folder of your school-issued Apple ID.
  • For students under age 13, Apple IDs are requested from Apple by the school. An email will then be sent to parents from Apple asking a parent or guardian to review the Apple ID request form online.  When the parent or guardian completes the request form, an Apple ID will then be created for the student. Apple IDs for students under 13 include the following features:
    • Account settings, such as email address and date of birth, cannot be changed.
    • No credit card is attached to the account at setup.
    • Limit Ad Tracking is turned on for the account to ensure the student does not receive targeted advertising from Apple.
    • Students can’t opt-in to receive marketing materials.
    • A parent or guardian can be notified of any significant changes to the terms of the account.
  • You may find more detailed information at: http://www.apple.com/education/docs/Apple_ID_Parent_Guide.pdf

Damaged ipads: Students are responsible for caring for their devices and are expected to return them at the end of the year in good working condition. Parents will be responsible for the following costs for the iPad issued to their child, regardless of circumstances:
  • First repairable breakage: $50
  • Second repairable breakage: $50
  • Lost iPad case: $35

Consequences for Inappropriate Use of iPads

  • Strike one: Student emails teachers, parents, and the Middle School Director describing the misuse.
  • Strike two: The iPad is handed in to the Middle School Director, an email is written by the student to all teachers and to the parent describing the misuse, and the student's parents need to arrange to pick up the iPad from the Middle School Director.
  • Strike three: Student and parent(s) meet with the Middle School Director to develop an individual student plan for appropriate use. An agreement is signed by the student, parent, the Middle School Director, and the student's teachers.
  • Strike four: The iPad is collected, and the student will need to make other arrangements to complete class and assigned work that requires iPad use.
Note: Due to the evolutionary nature of technology, our policies regarding the use of technology in our community will also be evolutionary and may be subject to change.
