Programs & Services

The Tandem Friends College Counseling Office offers many programs and services throughout the year to keep students informed about and connected to the college selection process.
College Admissions Panel - Representatives from both small liberal arts colleges and larger, public universities come to speak to Upper School students about the ins and outs of the college admissions process.

College Student Panel - Every January, Tandem alumni return to share their college experiences with Upper School students during our Speaker Series program.

College Visits - Throughout the fall, admissions officials from colleges around the state and from all over the country come to Tandem Friends to meet with interested students and answer any questions they might have about the school or the application process. This year, thirty such visits were made to allow our juniors and seniors to learn about schools that might interest them.

College Athletes - Tandem offers several supports to students who wish to pursue college athletics at a variety of levels.

Pre-College Program - Towards the end of their sophomore year, the College Counseling Team becomes a guest lecturer in sophomore English classes for a three-day workshop on the College Search and Application Process. This workshop is designed to help students begin to understand the variety of college options available to them, the importance of “fit” in putting together a good college list, and the relevance of grades, standardized testing and extracurricular involvement in the process.

Naviance - Naviance is a web-based resource allowing juniors to test college matches and for seniors to organize applications. The service provides sophisticated recordkeeping for the College Counseling office so that we can track application deadlines, keep our eyes on long-term trends, and produce accurate reports on outcomes.

Senior Week - While the 9th, 10th and 11th grades are on experiential trips in early September, seniors have the opportunity to “kick start” their college application process with a week of supervised instruction from the College Counseling Team. Seniors complete the main portion of the Common Application (minus the essay, which is tackled later in the month in their English class) as well as at least one additional non-Common App application. When not working on applications, they also work with the head of the Senior Project Committee on the beginning phases of their Senior Projects.
