7th Grade Math Takes on Teamwork and Pattern Recognition

7th graders in math class had fun working on the “100 numbers” problem with teacher Shannon McCullough. The 100 Numbers project is a group activity that’s designed to promote teamwork and pattern recognition. Students work together in teams of three, taking turns to identify the numbers 1-100 in order on a jumbled worksheet as they are timed. Each group has three minutes to try to highlight all 100 numbers in order. After the first round, the teams talk and strategize about what worked, what slowed them down, and any number patterns they noticed (there are patterns!). Successive rounds always yield improvement and pattern recognition, and students also learn some great teamwork skills in the process.
