Tandem Alum Competes in World Sheep Shearing and Woolhandling Competition

Tandem alum Maggie Passino (TFS '13) heads to New Zealand this week as a member of the US international team competing in the Golden Shears World Sheep Shearing and Woolhandling Competition. The competition, held in Invercargill, New Zealand from February 8-11, is literally the Olympics of sheep shearing and woolhandling. Maggie ranked tops in woolhandling at two straight national competitions to earn her spot on the team. Sporting team gear, she flew out yesterday for pre-competition training days.
Currently a student of agriculture at Virginia Tech, Maggie is no stranger to wool, having grown up on a sheep and goat farm in Fluvanna. She learned to card, dye and spin wool at a young age, and took a gap year to hone her woolhandling skills. Travelling to farms across the country with a sheep shearing team, Maggie quickly learned she was good enough to compete at the national level - and now, at the international level.

Maggie's mom, Heidi, a tutor at Tandem Friends, has taught an immensely popular goat farming Emphasis Week class on the family farm for many years - a class that has delighted students of all ages. Heidi will be travelling to New Zealand later this week to cheer on Maggie and the team. Her three siblings, all students at Tandem, will remain here with their dad, Steve, to support their big sister with the rest of our proud community.
