Tandem 8th Graders Win Big in Science Fair

In yesterday's 36th annual Virginia Piedmont Regional Science Fair, two young Tandem Friends scientists rose to the top.

Tandem 8th grader Leah Gunnoe placed first in the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering category with the Stirling engine she designed, which uses heat to create propulsion. Check out pictures of Leah and her design in today's Daily Progress!

8th grader Charlie Vavrik placed second in the Animal Sciences category with his project on Shark Solutions.
Leah's first place win also earned $100 for her Science teacher, Christine Putnam. 6th grade teacher Anne Deane served as Science Fair adult sponsor, and accompanied Leah and Charlie to yesterday's event, held at UVA's John Paul Jones Arena.

The Virginia Piedmont Regional Science Fair brings together over 300 students from more than 30 schools in the Piedmont area to compete in junior and senior-level categories with their projects. Click here for more information on the fair.
