Middle School Scientists at Work in the Lab

Anne Deane
7th grade science has completed two labs so far. The first was a heart rate lab comparing bpm when resting, strolling, and running in place (see photos). We learned how to design an experiment, record accurate data, and create a graph on Google Sheets. We used some cool tools, including pulse oximeters and timers that beeped loudly (sorry to the math class next door!). Our second lab involved the Stroop Effect, where your brain struggles to ignore the written word and say the ink color instead: RED  BLUE  GREEN  Click here  for one of the word lists we used, and try the test at home!

8th grade science has been considering how to distinguish pseudoscience, such as astrology, from real science. We have also completed a measurement lab using a variety of metric tools, and reviewed the metric prefixes and bases. We used the prefixes to rename money amounts: deka-dollars ($10), deci-dollars (10 cents), etc. Our second lab involves standing on counters and dropping paper helicopters, and is still ongoing. Pictures next week!
