Week #5: Serious Statement: Badgers Earn Individual Title, Dominate VISAA Opponents at Pole Green

Boys Varsity Cross Country - Every cross country race is different but there is one element that is always the same. The elite runners, who are both fit and tactically skilled, control the tempo and set the pace. When they make a move, the opponent has to decide whether or not to match it. Last season at the Pole Green Invitational, the lead pack went out at a blazing speed of 4:45 for the first mile. This season, those same runners tucked in behind Hayes as he went out in 4:55 - lightning quick for a mere mortal, easy for a back-to- back state champion. 
 
There were ten runners in the lead pack at that first check point, enjoying a largely flat first mile. Then the course went into the woods, where the athletes run a steep and challenging hill. Testing both their mental fortitude and physical fitness, Hayes picked up his pace on the significant incline that was the second mile. Some athletes dared to match the increased speed, others simply realized they could not. With a mile to go, the lead pack was down to three runners, two breathing a little harder than the man in gray. 
 
The closing move came much earlier than expected. Hayes did not wait for the homestretch to out-kick his competition, as he did at the 2024 State Championship meet. This time, he put the race away early - and by the time Hayes came around the corner for the final 800 meters, he was all alone. His competition, victim to a sequence of brilliant tactical distance running - and elite talent - were nowhere to be seen as he crossed the line in 15:50 - earning the pole position at the esteemed Pole Green Invitational - a 17-second victory at one of the most prestigious races in the state of Virginia!
Hayes led the Badgers to an incredible day - notably defeating VISAA Division III rival by over 100 points! Miles, a fellow senior, dropped 13 seconds off his time from 2025 at the same meet! Miles time of 17:06 is a course PR, earning him 18th place overall! That extraordinary growth is the product of a lot of hard work - as Hayes, Miles, Peter W and Peter D work out together each and every day - weekends included. 
 
Peter W (18:12) had an incredible race, dropping 1:14 off of his time from 2025, while Peter D (18:39) dropped nearly FOUR MINUTES off his time from 2025 - and earned a PR of OVER A MINUTE, breaking 19:00 for the first time!! Last season, the coaches had a meeting to decide whether or not Peter D was ready to come to a big invitational so early in the season... in just 12 months, he has become a key member of our top-level program - determined and committed to being the best version of himself!
 
Closing the door on the Tandem total score, both Jude (21:50) and Nico (22:29) both moved up to run in the Championship Division! Jude knocked over 30 seconds off his 2025 time, while Nico made his debut in the event! The Badgers also had strong performances from another pack of seniors! Working together, Alexander (22:00) and Zeke (22:10) each performed at a high level! Daniel made his Pole Green debut in a time of 26:35. 
 
Congratulations to this incredible team on an extraordinary day. Building on our success at the Ragged Mountain Cup, Tandem finished as the top private school, 121 points ahead of Veritas! With his second individual victory in five days, Hayes remains undefeated - dominating a talented field with well over 300 runners!
 
Girls Varsity Cross Country - With a quiet confidence, Eve angled her eyes up - over the incline - as she used short quick strides to power her way up each hill. Whether it's Biscuit Run, the hills at PVCC, or the brutal second mile of the Pole Green Invitational, one cannot help but be inspired by her effort. This afternoon, as Eve blew by an opposing runner, they simply stopped and began to walk. "Come on," Eve said to her, "let's do it together." 
 
That's also the approach Eve has taken with her new teammates, pushing them to be their best. Today, she worked closely with Sawyer, who was making her 5K debut - an enormous gift to a rookie runner in a huge invitational. Working together for nearly two miles, Eve ran a course PR of 25:31 - while Sawyer established a new 5K PR of 26:25. It will be broken regularly, you can set your watch for next Saturday - Sawyer will be well under 26:00.
 
Earning 16th place in a highly competitive field, Lucy dropped 11 seconds off of her time from 2025. She did the same at the Ragged Mountain Cup, and running 23:30 in early September is an indication that October Lucy is going to be extraordinary. Dhruvi (26:35) dropped TWO MINUTES off of her Pole Green time from 2025! She continues to improve, showing off a brand new level of grit. She's already brainstorming how many miles she can run during experience week!
 
Rounding out the scoring five, Samari (27:41) made her 5K debut, and did it in style. The sky is the limit for a strong athlete who looked incredibly comfortable on the course, highlighted by the way she ran past ten runners in the last 400 meters! Meanwhile, Victoria (28:31) had a THREE MINUTE PR, breaking 30:00 for the first time (and 31:00... and 29:00) while also finishing as a member of the Varsity 7 for the first time.
 
Rounding it out for the Badgers, Alice made her Pole Green debut in 28:08! Laurel (31:30) and Caffall (31:50) worked together - for Caffall it was her first 5K ever - and what a strong effort!
 
Congratulations to our Girls Varsity Badgers on an extraordinary day, finishing Top Ten in a decorated field.
