Week #3 - Locked In: MS Girls Volleyball Excel on their Home Floor!
Dave Levy, Athletic Director
As soon as they walked into the gym, the Badgers set up to do their pepper drills and hitting lines. On one side of the floor Retta, Aggie and Annie were setting up their platforms, with slight upward motions, passing the ball to one another. On the other, Cora, Freya, Willa and Clara were working on their hitting, flicking their wrist and focusing on their footwork on the approach. Their skills are growing each day! Inspired by attending a close Tandem Varsity game yesterday as a team, the Middle School Girls truly excelled this afternoon against Covenant.
Zuri got the scoring going - she had four consecutive aces to open the match, most of them hit to the backline where the other side simply had no answer. Defensively, the serve/receive featured Sam making a pass to Zoe who set Adela for a big swing. With the Badgers back on the offensive, Zoe delivered some strong serves, Adela made key plays at the net, and Tandem had an awesome rally with some excellent teamwork (the ball went over the net six times) resulting in a timeout from the opposition.
The Badgers were down two when Adela snapped off a sequence of aces - her serve was so powerful that it began to storm outside. Covenant called another timeout, but the momentum could not be broken. Rory stepped to the line next, had several laser beam serves, and the Badgers took a 22-16 lead. After a short Covenant rally, Aurelia set Zoe for a big hit for Tandem's 24th point. Sam delivered an ace, and the Badgers won the opening set 25-21!
In the second set, Oliver had a massive hit to put the opponent on their heels. Sam worked closely with Zoe and Zuri, setting them both for big hits, and Hadley smashed some big time serves. The Badgers opened an eight point lead, but Covenant rallied. Trailing 23-22, it was Zuri who finished with big hits on each of the next three plays, each resulting in a Tandem point! The Badgers prevailed 25-23.
Congratulations to this exciting team that continues to improve. The Badgers will have a fun week next week with upper school off campus - practices on Monday and Wednesday and games on Tuesday at 4pm vs CCS and Thursday at 4pm vs James River. Both games are at Tandem.
