Week #8 - Badgers Play an Exciting 5 Set Battle, Volleyball Senior Day On Tuesday!
Dave Levy, Athletic Director
Late in the first set, Cora slammed the ball over the net with her left hand. The opponent could only muster a weakly hit ball - and Cora watched it fall out of bounds. Maya and Emory painted the sidelines with aces, but Tandem still trailed 13-21. With excellent defense, particularly from Lola on the back line, the Badgers scored the next four points to force a Foxcroft timeout! Lola was outstanding - she dove low for a number of pancake digs, and also had some huge hits during Tandem's exciting comeback. Despite their early eight point deficit, the Badgers battled back and took the first set 26-24 - with Cora making the big play down the stretch!! What a rally!
The Badgers were down in the second set as well, and despite a few nice hits from Elisabeth, Foxcroft was able to even the score at 1-1. Tandem didn't waste any time getting back in the driver seat; the Badgers won the first six points of the third set off Emory's consistent service. As Foxcroft attempted to get the serve back, Elisabeth and Cora teamed up for a big block!
Zella also had a sequence of aces! The Badgers took a big lead as Claire made a perfect pass to Emory who set Lola for a punishing kill. Lola continued her smooth play as she dropped the ball just over the blockers, and the Badgers took the third set off a big serve from Claire, 25-17.
In the fourth set, Maya had a series of intimidating big hits - some from the back line - and Althea had a three ball kill! The Badgers led early 6-2. Lola broke up an opposing block party with a massive swing from the outside, and Claire was super clutch with an ace late in the set. Tandem led 23-21 after Althea's big hit from the middle. Foxcroft managed to take the set, and the match was tied at 2.
Despite a powerful block from Elisabeth and some excellent defense from Zella the fifth set, which was close yet again, did not go Tandem's way. The Badgers have been in a lot of tough matchups this season, many of them going five sets, and this experience will benefit our squad moving forward. There's a lot of volleyball still to be played! That includes Tuesday's Senior Day match at 5:15 vs Stuart Hall. We will celebrate the seniors after the game. This is our final regular season match in the Badger Den.
