6th Graders Study Life, the Universe and More

6th grade science students, with Christina Davis as their teacher, are learning about the Big Bang Theory and the expansion of the universe. In one experiment, students used balloons to model the expansion of the universe. They drew dots on their balloons to represent galaxies, and then measured the distances between the galaxies using string. As their balloons expanded, so did the distances between the galaxies. They also found that the farther away a dot was from the home dot, the faster its movement. In the 1920’s, Edwin Hubble observed that galaxies were moving in the same way. This later led to the Big Bang Theory of the Origin of the Universe.
