Our varsity girls basketball team headed to the DAC tournament finals on Saturday, February 22 at Highland School, playing Randolph Macon Academy for the championship title (the girls ended the regular DAC season in first place as well, so were already regular season champs with a record of 11-6). • Indoor Track Runners Excel in State Meet

Two talented Tandem runners trekked to Richmond for the VISAA State Indoor Track Meet on February 15 at St. Christopher's. Unlike other sports where state competitions are separated by size of school, indoor track lumps all private schools together regardless of size into one group. Junior Mason Love ran the 3200 meter (a few feet short of 2 miles) in 9:44.39, finishing second in the state. Lilly Bower made her first state appearance as a 9th grader running the 500 meter (equivalent of running 1 lap and a straightaway on an outdoor track). She ran it in 1:27.04, finishing 12th in the state. Way to go, Badgers!!

  • Basketball Teams have Great Week of Games

Tandem's basketball teams are off to a great 2019-2020 season start. The five teams - varsity boys, varsity girls, JV boys, Middle School boys, and Middle School girls - played eight games the week after Thanksgiving, and all five teams played on December 5. There were some great wins! The Middle School teams had tough losses against Covenant but showed some great skill for so early in the season. The JV boys beat Grace Christian School 46-35, then lost to FUMA. Varsity girls beat Fresta Valley 47-40, then defeated Regents 40-39 in a nail-biting overtime win. The varsity boys had two strong wins, defeating Fredericksburg Christian 59-44 and beating tough rival FUMA 70-67. What a great week for basketball at Tandem!

  • Alum players and fans - alums vs varsity game

Annual Alumni vs Varsity Basketball Game and Turkey Bowl Bring Alums Back

This year's annual alumni vs varsity basketball game was played on Tuesday, November 26 to a rowdy crowd. While there were not enough alums to form a full team to take on the girls, one female alum joined the guys in the game while a few others remained as fans.  The alums led for much of the time, but in the end the varsity boys prevailed (with a little help from coach Sampson Dale, a former Tandem Middle Schooler). You can catch some video of the second half of the game on our Facebook page - the game included lots of good-hearted fun and taunting.

Alum players, coached and cheered on by former coach Gordon Fields, included Matt Meriwether ('05), Anthony Nelson ('19), Javon Carter ('17), Aslan Urushanov ('17), Matt Mahoney ('11), Kate Moody ('13), Tommy White ('16), Jalen Anderson ('19), Ian Bloom ('15), Rodes Jarman ('17), and Latrell Winkey ('18). Alum fans in attendance (many of whom were players themselves) included (at least these are the ones in the post-game photo) Jake Minturn (03), Dirk Kingma ('04), Nick Passino ('19), Emma Passino ('17), Maggie Passino ('13), Jordan Drexel ('15), Tori Carter-Johnston ('18), Kalina Zizulka ('18), Jeremy Odrich ('19), Brendan Mahoney ('08), and Rebecca Barber ('11). Many thanks to all who came out to support this fun annual event. We are told there will be a girl's game next year, so former players, be ready!

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, we held the annual John A. Davis Memorial Turkey Bowl, a longstanding Tandem tradition that's an open soccer game for all ages held the day after Thanksgiving on the pitch. This year's attendance was particularly affected by the UVA-Virginia Tech football game, so only a few intrepid souls came out to play. Alums Tommy White ('16), Ali Abdel-Rahman ('16) and Dirk Kingma ('04) came to play, as did Dirk's wife Jackie Rose Kingma (former Tandem Athletic Director and teacher) and their daughter, June. Former drama teacher and Development Director Larry Goldstein also attended, as did Advancement Director Tracy Proctor. Thanks to those who came out - we're hoping for a bigger turnout next year.

  • Winter Sports Underway

Our 2019-2020 winter sports season is officially underway, and the gym will be its usual hive of activity as five basketball teams make use of one court for a multitude of practices and games. This year, Tandem will field basketball teams for varsity boys and girls, a JV boys team, and Middle School teams for boys and girls in grades 6-8. Both varsity teams have new coaches this year - Sampson Dale, who attended Tandem as a Middle Schooler, heads up the varsity boys; Kerry Shelton, who previously coached our Middle School girls team, takes over the varsity girls team from Gordon Fields. Additionally, an indoor track team (in name only, as they still do a lot of practicing outdoors) will be competing around the region in a variety of events. Check out the busy winter sports schedule on our website calendar, and try to make it to the Badger Den for a game between now and mid February!

The winter competitive season kicks off on November 26 as our varsity basketball teams take on alums - all former Tandem players are encouraged to come out and join the alumni team for an evening of fun.

  • Fall All-Conference Honors Plentiful

Tandem's fall varsity student athletes (and coaches) received many All-State (VISAA Division 2) and All-Conference (Delaney Athletic Conference) honors this season. We fielded two All-State runners, a conference Runner of the Year, a conference soccer Co-Player of the Year, six All-Conference runners, nine conference First team athletes, one conference Second Team athlete, one conference Honorable Mention athlete, and two conference Co-Coaches of the year. Not too bad for a school that maintains a no-cut sports policy!

Varsity cross country honors abounded. Junior Mason Love, named an All-State Runner and DAC Runner of the Year, also finished the season in 6th place in the All-Central Virginia cross country poll (Daily Progress and Ragged Mountain Running). Senior Nathan Stevenson was named an All-State Runner. All-Conference honors also went to seniors Nathan Stevenson and Meridith Frazee (all conference for her fifth straight season), juniors Sophie Farr, Mason Love, and Mario Pepper, and 8th grader Charlie Kalnite.

  • Fall Sports 2019 Wrapup

It was a big fall season for Tandem sports, culminating in both our varsity boys soccer team and our volleyball team hosting and playing in the DAC tournament campionship games. With seven fall teams, more than half of our Upper Schoolers were playing a fall sport, as well as over fifty of our Middle Schoolers. Here's how our teams fared this season:

    • MS boys soccer had a 4-7 season that included some big wins over Waldorf and Peabody; they finished with a 4-2 win over Peabody in a very rainy game.

    • MS volleyball had 29 players this year and a brand new coach in Sampson Dale (who attended Tandem himself as a Middle Schooler). Sam divided the girls into two complete teams that took turns playing the scheduled games. It was a great building year, and there were big wins over STAB and Charlottesville Catholic.

    • MS cross country ran in three meets this season, hosting one themselves. They were an enthusiastic and devoted group and showed continued improvement over the season with great coaching by Cindy Cartwright and student leadership by 8th grader Charlie Kalnite.

    • JV volleyball played a split season, winning half of their games and really focusing on skill building. Comprised of 7th-10th graders, they had exciting wins over local rivals Miller and STAB.

    • The varsity boys soccer team finished up as regular season DAC champions with an overall record of 10-3-4. Despite a hard-fought finals match played on the Monticello HS turf field, the boys played to a tie, then lost 2-3 in a sudden death overtime. All-Conference honors were plentiful: senior Josh Warren was named Co-Player of the Year; 1st Team honors went to senior Matthew McCullough, junior Ford Scott, sophomores Patrick Jabalee-Farrell and Dylan Peifer, and freshmen Parker Lerman and Jaden Reynolds. Coach Nate Adkins was named Co-Coach of the Year.

    • The varsity volleyball team finished as DAC regular season champions and earned 13th place in the state with an 18-5 overall record. They beat Quantico 3-0 in the semifinals of the conference tournament but lost to Chelsea Academy in a challenging finals match. It was a great season and there were many all-conference honors shared: 1st Team honors went to junior Julia Dailey and freshmen Talia Smith and Anna Warren. 2nd Team honors went to senior Elyse Jabalee-Farrell and Honorable Mention went to junior Stella Lane. Coach Brandon Edwards was named Co-Coach of the Year.

    • Varsity cross country had a great season, breaking personal records at almost every meet. At the DAC conference championship meet, the boys team ended up second in the conference (with Mason and Nathan coming in first and second in the race), with our girls team coming in fourth. We had lots of All-Conference honors: junior Mason Love was named DAC Runner of the Year; All-Conference honors went to seniors Meridith Frazee (all conference for her fifth straight season) and Nathan Stevenson, juniors Sophie Farr, Mason Love, and Mario Pepper, and 8th grader Charlie Kalnite. In the state meet on November 7 at Pole Green Park, Mason finished third (with a time that would have earned him first in Division 1) and Nathan finished ninth in the race. Our boys team finished 9th in the state and the girls finished 19th out of 35 teams. Mason and Nathan were named All-State runners! What a season for these talented runners.
What a great start to a year of Tandem sports! Go Badgers!

  • Meet Our New Athletic Director

Tandem's new Athletic Director, Brandon Edwards, is not a new face to Tandem or to sports. He came to Tandem in November of 2016 to serve as our Admissions Director, quickly becoming a valued member of staff as well as a beloved volleyball and track coach. Brandon had been working at Randolph College in Lynchburg where he served as the Assistant Admissions Director.

Brandon jumped right into the AD job this summer, quickly taking over the scheduling, hiring of coaches and encouraging of athletes of all ages. He brings a joyful enthusiasm to the job and has some great overall goals for the program in mind. He would really like to see a higher emphasis on athletic development of players and teams. He knows that communication is vital to the success of every season, and plans to encourage evaluation of individual players, coaches and programs to ensure growth.

Brandon earned a BA in Religious Studies and Psychology from Lynchburg College and holds an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Lynchburg College. He was a varsity Track and Field athlete in college - a sprinter, a jumper and a hurdler. He was a three-sport athlete in high school (Faquier High School), playing football, basketball and track and certainly knows the academic and physical challenges that come with being a busy multi-sport student athlete.

For Brandon, the Athletic Director job combines his deep passion for sports with the ability to make a difference in the lives of our student athletes, who look to him as a role model for advice, support and encouragement.
