September 28-October 2, 2026

Things were a little calmer this week than they were the past two weeks, which were filled with Experience Days adventures. The weather was much more enjoyable. Students and faculty are back on track with classes and great academic projects, clubs and play rehearsals are abundant, sports teams are actively practicing and competing with some amazing results (read details below), and there were seven visits from college admissions representatives. We held our first Admissions event of the year, and our second Pancake Friday brought many to the cafe this morning. Tandem’s table at Cville Pride Fest last weekend was a popular one and we thank all who attended or volunteered. Middle School parents turned out to Discover the Upper School last night.

Middle Schoolers held a great Hispanic Heritage Month Knowledge Bowl one afternoon this week during Community Time. Students broke into small groups to answer a variety of questions. The event was emceed by Spanish teacher Victoria Bryant. 7th graders planted lettuce in the school garden as a science experiment. Upper School Student Senate results were announced this week - see details below. The Upper School Student Senate is hosting a Movie Night on the front lawn tonight, complete with hot dogs and s’mores. Our Geeky Girls group holds their first event for young girls interested in STEM tomorrow.

Today’s Community Time brought the first Open Mic of the year - the whole community gathered in the open on the quad to listen to each other perform. There were musical solos and duos, some standup comedy, music genres from musical theatre to rock ballads to the Bee Gees, Elmo and Kermit singing a Hamilton song, and two teachers surprising us all with a lovely duet. Thanks to senior emcees Fletcher, Jude and Van for keeping things moving. What a beautiful way to spend an October afternoon.

It’s a busy fall at Tandem - keep an eye on the events below as some new ones have been added and you don’t want to miss anything. Mark your calendars for the Community Picnic on Friday, October 23 from 5-7pm.
