Part 4: A Meet at Home

It’s a beautiful day for cross country and this race is like few others: Tandem’s first home cross country meet. It’s been a dream of Jason’s for years, to be able to host something on campus. There are only two schools competing, Tandem and St. Anne’s Belfield. The course comprises five loops around the athletic fields, up the hill to the Field House and back down again, swerving through bird houses. It’s not an ideal course. It’s hard to keep track of the number of laps, both when you’re racing and exhausted, and for those managing the meet, trying to track who has another lap to go and who to direct toward the finish line. Still the energy feels jubilant and positive. The boys have their spikes on and shiny sunglasses so you can’t see their eyes.
Hayes runs his race smart, sticking with the front runner, pacing all the way. At the final downhill of the last lap he kicks ahead. I look to Jason’s face and see fierce joy. “Yes!” he cries as he pumps his fist.

    Part 2: The Numbers Game

To put it plainly, Jason says, “To win in cross country, you need five.” For years the team was so close, with three or four runners at top speed. “But we never had five,” Jason says. Andy remembers, “competing at Woodberry Forest and Veritas was there, and Jason turned to me and said, ‘How are we ever going to beat these guys?’”

Overtime Sudden Victory Highlights Historic Season for Tandem Lacrosse!

Just as he has done a million times before, Oscar drew back his stick and cocked his arm. This shot was different: it came with the game on the line, tied 7-7 against FUMA, in overtime, in the final game of the 2025 season. With pinpoint precision, Oscar's powerful shot sliced through the air like a comet, leaving the goalie in disbelief as the ball pierced the back of the net! Oscar truly Badgered up: his goal gave Tandem the victory in an exciting back and forth contest, putting the finishing touches on a historic season for Tandem Lacrosse.

The Badgers trailed 4-3 after the first quarter, 5-4 at halftime and 7-6 late in the fourth quarter. As they have done all season, Tandem stayed the course, battled back, and forced an overtime period - sudden victory on the line. In many ways, this is emblematic of all the hard work this special team has put in throughout the year. It was six degrees outside in mid-December, and nobody had been on the field in months. Nobody, that is, except for Coach Tony and his determined group of off-season warriors, perfecting their craft and working on new skills. That hard work has paid off.

As the calendar approached February, Jack and I met and looked at the roster. The team had ten players, not enough for a full team this season. "I swear I can get him to play," Jack assured me, "we will have enough!" He and Oscar were constantly updating me on the depth of our roster, and some new players he had convinced to put on their pads and give Lacrosse a try. On the first day of official practice, we had seven players. "Basketball isn't over yet," Jack reminded me. "I'll get a bunch of those guys to play, too."

  • The Long View: The Rise of Tandem XC Issue 1

You may not think of Tandem, our alma mater, as an athletic powerhouse. Yet for a school of our size, we’ve had some incredible triumphs in sports. Back in the early 2010s, girls soccer was the dominant program at Tandem. They were on a 3-year state championship winning streak. Yet, with a small pool of students there’s always an ebb and flow, a rise and fall. When one program is big and popular, it draws students away from others. The dominant program today, whether you believe it or not, is cross country.

One With the Wind: Ultimate Frisbee Enjoys Great Success at Darden Towe!

Blustery and relentless, the winds hit fifty miles per hour this week.  Rather than practice inside, the Tandem Ultimate Frisbee team chose to take the field - and track the disc - as it flew through the sky, uncontrollably, in all directions.  Strategically, the Badgers prepared by running a stack offense - focusing on short cuts and quick, low passes - spending as little time in the air as possible. Their time on the field prepared them for the conditions this afternoon at Darden Towe, where mother nature made a statement: she routinely sent the frisbee back in the direction from which it came! Nonetheless, the Badgers brought their A game and stood tall in the wind! Both the Blue Angels and Light Blue Badgers were up to the task!

On the Light Blue side, Aven scored the first point. He beat his defender to the corner of the end zone, before cutting across the field.  Dylan launched a backhand pass around the tight defense - and Aven snatched it out of the air to get the Badgers off to a great start!  Tandem continued to put the pressure on their opponent - Levi knocked the disc out of the air right on the goal line of one end of the field, and then flicked a pass right on the money the entire length of pitch.  Henry W, zooming in at full speed, caught the disc in the back of the end zone, giving the Light Blue Badgers a 2-0 lead.
