Tandem sophomore Grace Muehlman has been a competitive mountain biker for several years. She is a member of the local Charlottesville Racing Club, which competes as part of the Virginia Interscholastic Cycling League (part of the league). Last weekend, Grace won the Sophomore Girls title in the second race of this year's series, held at Monticello High School. Her time of 38:30:12 (see full results here) was 90 seconds faster than in her first race of the season, in which she placed fourth. Way to go, Grace!
The crowd was shouting during every service toss and every set. They were screaming after each point. As a result, the Badgers needed a calm, confident player with the ball in her hands at the end of the second set. After winning the opening set 25-19, Tandem was behind during the second - and the opponent was gaining momentum. With a deficit of 8 points, the Badgers began to battle back. Althea had a number of tips at the net, Taylor and Ella were both incredible with their passing, but Tandem still trailed 19-23 when Emory took the ball to serve.
Electric all season, Sophie opened the game with an ace. Hit hard and rotating with backspin, the NCS back line scrambled to return it. Sophie's serve percentage has been elite - she averages four aces per match. The Badgers led early - Ellia had an excellent dig - knocking the ball back off the net to Emory who drilled it into the open space on the other side of the court. Her serve is vicious, too! The Badgers led 4-2 early, with Ginger commanding the middle, Kaylee showing off her consistent serve and court vision, and Catriona's soft hands as a setter.
The Varsity Boys Soccer team improved their record to 6-3-1 today on the road at Quantico with a 4-1 victory! The team will wrap up their regular season on Monday at 4:15 at Stuart Hall - a rematch of a very exciting 1-1 tie last week! Ranked 9th in the state, the Varsity Soccer Badgers are poised to qualify for the Virginia State Tournament, with round one on Halloween. Mark your calendar!
The Middle School Cross Country team competed in the Grymes Invitational (three teams) at Grymes Memorial School in Orange yesterday. The boys team won the meet, led by a 2nd place finish by 5th grader Clyde W and a 3rd place finish by 6th grader Fletcher S. The girls team also ran hard on a challenging, hilly course. Way to go, Middle School runners!
