It was a shortened but busy four-day week at Tandem thanks to a holiday on Tuesday. Things were a little calmer than they were the past two weeks, which were filled with Experience Days adventures. Students and faculty are back on track with classes and great academic projects, clubs and play rehearsals are abundant, sports teams are actively practicing and competing, and there were seven visits from college admissions representatives for juniors and seniors. We held our first cross-divisional Meetings for Worship (Middle and Upper School grades together in two different locations). Work Crew went into full swing this week as well.
The Upper School held Student Senate representative elections - choosing two classmates from each grade to represent them after listening to candidate speeches during Community Time (see details below). There was a Clothing Swap that brought in and sent out many upcycled articles of clothing. Several seniors were recognized as National Merit Scholar honorees (see details below). Middle Schoolers enjoyed their first Friday club activities - held during Community Time once a month and featuring options such as arts & crafts, drama, board games, outdoors, reading, music, sports, Fat Bear week, and more.
The Upper School Speaker Series guest today was Katie Kishore, founder of the Kindness Cafe + Play, talking about how the cafe came to be and their mission, which includes hiring those with cognitive disabilities. Katie spoke about the importance of connecting with others who are different from us and how important it is to keep Kindness at the center of those connections. There are two Kindness Cafe locations in town - one at Brooks Family YMCA and one on Rugby Road. Click here to watch a wonderful video about them.
Last night, parents and guardians came to campus to spend a shortened 'day in the life' of their student(s), attending a ten-minute version of each class to learn what's in store for the academic year, meeting faculty and staff, and visiting the mental health Provider Village that was set up in the Blue Room. The rain held off until after the final ‘bell’ rang. Thanks to all of you for the wonderful turnout and the great sense of community that Back-to-School-Night always generates. We hope you enjoyed 'walking a mile' in your students' shoes.
Don't forget that there will be NO SCHOOL on Thursday, October 2 as faculty and staff observe a Professional Development day. Enjoy the weekend!
