Week #18 - A Historic Afternoon: JV Girls Basketball Take the Floor!
Dave Levy, Athletic Director
The Tandem Class of 2027 has been the core of the Girls Basketball program for a long time. They played Varsity as 8th, 9th and 10th Graders - constantly improving - and often with little depth or upperclassmen on the roster. Last season, they were joined by two Seniors and two 8th Graders, and the roster began to grow! This year even more reinforcements arrived resulting in the need for some JV Basketball games. This afternoon, the JV Badgers took the court together for the first time, many of them playing new positions, representing the future of the program.
It was particularly exciting to see players take on new roles. Sophie and Malena played point guard - setting up their teammates and running the offense - each for the first time. That's a lot of pressure - and they handled it incredibly well! Nieve was super solid on the wing as a shooting guard, while Marilyn patrolled the paint like a boss! She had seven rebounds, and even showed off her improved ball handling skills. It was definitely a valuable experience for this young squad!
Madeline and Nina, both starters, were commanding on the boards in the opening period. Both players claimed rebounds, and Nina then set a big screen to free Sophie to go the other way. Offensively, it was Nieve spacing the floor. She provided an outlet, and as she gained more confidence, Nieve drove to the basket, put up several shots, and played an aggressive brand of basketball.
Sophie had a huge block on the Covenant point guard, one of many defensive plays she made this afternoon. She threw great outlet passes to Catriona, who then went the length of the floor on a breakaway! Julia had several rebounds. Not bashful, she took a number of deep shots, spacing the floor for her teammates. Malena ripped the ball away from an opponent, forcing a jump ball!
Maeve entered in the second quarter, and got into the box score right away. She had a key rebound, passing the ball ahead to Alice, who was a great passer as well! After Sophie stole the ball away from Covenant, she passed it ahead to Julia - who was aggressive offensively throughout the game! Marilyn rebounded and passed out to Maeve, who also launched her first shot of the season!
The Badgers held Covenant to only four points in the final period! What a great effort - and a lot of awesome experience for these young players!
