Why a Friends Education?

Tandem Friends School’s Quaker philosophy holds that there is “that of God” in every person.

Out of this central belief comes a commitment to working cooperatively with others. Accepting individual differences, making decisions by consensus, and striving to reach peaceful resolutions to conflicts are all direct manifestations of this belief. We strive to be inclusive in our approach to spiritual truths, and welcome the consideration of all religious ideas as we journey together. Our school, like other Friends schools in general, is not interested in indoctrination or religious proselytizing.

Our Quaker philosophy provides the school’s foundation. We recognize that every person carries an inner wisdom, and has much to contribute to the community. Our most crucial mission is to teach respect for oneself and for others. As a Friends school, we offer students many ways to explore matters not only of the mind, but also of the heart.

Tandem Friends School is a member school of the Friends Council on Education.

  • Friends Education in a Nutshell

There are many unique aspects to a Tandem Friends education - Freedom with Responsibility, one-on-one relationships with teachers, Quaker values and practices, and service learning, to name a few. These qualities are a part of everyday life for our students. There are other equally important and unique things every student will encounter, things they might not find at any other school, things that they will remember fondly when they look back on their years here. Some of these events happen daily, some occur once a year; all are life-altering affirmations of a school that stresses community, learning, listening, and sharing.
  • Advisory Program

The advisory program is a key component of the curriculum in both the Middle School and the Upper School and reflects a commitment to realizing the mission of the school at each grade level. All students are assigned to small group advisories by grade and meet once each week. The advisory program is designed to support and empower the student in personal development, self-advocacy, ethical behavior, academic excellence, and community engagement.

  • Quaker Values

All Friends Schools honor the traditional Quaker values of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship. At Tandem Friends, we weave them throughout our Advisory and academic programs; they are the backbone of our community and they shape all we do and how we interact with one another.
  • Meeting for Worship

Meeting for Worship is the center of organized spiritual activity here. Each Wednesday, the school community gathers for forty minutes of shared silence. We sit in silence, listening inwardly, together. Sometimes someone shares a thought. Sometimes a "query" is presented for reflection at the beginning of the Meeting. Always, we go to Meeting with the belief that each member of the community carries an Inner Light which can be gleaned and expressed when one listens deeply to oneself and others.
