Monticello High School, our across the street neighbors, enrolls over 1,300 students. Last season, our JV Boys Basketball team played them twice - once at Tandem and once on the road. While the Badgers played hard, neither game was close, which was to be expected, given the difference in size. As the Monticello JV Boys walked across the street this afternoon, they may have imagined another easy win - but this Badger team is different - and Tandem made sure that nothing was easy for their opponent throughout their home opener in the Badger Den.
Led by a dynamic front court, the Badgers scored 19 points in the first quarter. Jace faked the pass one way and threw a beautiful entry pass to Mason in the post. He turned, pivoted, and got to the block. Nearly impossible to cover, Mason scored six in the opening period, and 18 overall. On the other side of the floor, it was Dalin who showed off beautiful back to the basket game. Dalin would force his defender under the rim, turn and score. His patience was excellent, also looking for cutters. Between that and some open court lay-ups initiated by Dalin plucking the ball away from the opposing point guard, Dalin scored nine in the first quarter, and 19 overall.
The Badgers led 19-7 after one, and Monticello was determined to flip the momentum. They knocked down a few threes before halftime. Each time, the Badgers responded - first with Jace from the top of the key and later with Derion who is automatic from the corner. Derion also finished in double digits with 11. Tandem's guard play was essential as Monticello brought ball pressure in the hopes that the Badgers wouldn't be able to get the ball inside.
It was 33-22 at halftime, and Tandem recommitted to giving the ball to their big men. Dalin and Mason combined for 12 in the third, all in the paint, and Levie chipped in four of his own! With Monticello making a final push in the second half, Jace stepped up. He planted his foot in the paint and showed off a beautiful spin move. Moments later, King beat his man to the basket, scoring high off the back board!
With all the momentum in their favor, Jace swung the ball to Levi who cashed in a three pointer from the wing, his first points of the young season. All seven Badgers scored today! Tandem finished the game with a 19-point win, 64-45, improving their record to 2-0. "We are gonna get those public schools this year," Coach George confidently said before the game - and now we have. The Badgers pulled off a massive upset, defending their home court and defeating a much larger school! (You know, approximately 13 times bigger.) Congratulations TFS JV Basketball! What a big time win!
