Getting Creative in Middle School Spanish

Victoria Bryant
In 8th grade Spanish, students had the opportunity to create their own original children’s books utilizing key vocabulary and grammar structures they have learned through stories and conversations throughout the year. They then went on a field trip to the International School of Charlottesville and read their stories to 1st and 2nd graders. during their next class they sat around outside and read their stories to each other. The stories showed the array of creative ideas from these blossoming authors in Spanish, including a green cow that lands on earth and cows from our planet that learn to welcome and accept differences, to a cat and dog who learn to work together after some tensions arise and then cook spaghetti and meatballs. In 5th grade Spanish students started the day with surprise balloons as part of senior pranks last Friday. They then had the idea to apply their knowledge of describing characters by creating their own and writing a short paragraph in Spanish, then drawing their person’s face on their balloons! ~ Victoria Bryant
