Varsity Girls Basketball - "I think we can win four games this year," Ginger shared with her 11th grade teammates before the season began. Maya, Catriona, Juli, Elisabeth and Madeline have all been on the team since their 9th Grade season, and the improvement has been enormous. During the 23-24 season, the Badgers came away with one victory. Last year, the Badgers won twice, including a 23-point game from Maya on the road at Stuart Hall. This season, the Varsity Girls Basketball team won SEVEN TIMES, more than tripling their win total from last season. The team swept both Foxcroft and WCDS, and also beat RMA, Quantico, and Fredericksburg Academy on the road in the playoffs! And with a roster that features only two seniors, plus reinforcements from the Middle School tournament champions on their way, the sky is the limit.
Tonight's GPAC Semi-Final at Highland was the third time the two teams have met this season. The Girls Varsity Badgers earned the right to play this afternoon by winning - and winning big - yesterday at Fredericksburg Academy. The team scored a season high of 52 points!!! Aoife had 14 and Annie 11 in the first quarter, on pace for 72 and 44 points respectively! I have exciting news - they're both just ninth graders!
Today the Badgers had their high point total against Highland this season. How did they do it? The team was aggressive - attacking the basket - and shot 92% from the free throw line! Marilyn got on the board first - a player who shoveled the driveway so she could work on her foul shots, she earned those two early points - and another one later in the game!
Ginger knocked down two free throws in the second quarter. Annie, who finished with five points on the day, was 3/3 at the line, including a play where she used a cross over to get by her defender - she drew the foul and made the basket, and went on score at the line. Catriona, for the second day in a row, earned a trip to the line and cashed in, as did Maya, who also scored a deep three pointer for good measure. The Badgers scored 10 in the final period, while holding Highland to only 11!!
This has been an historic season for the Badgers for so many reasons. Here are four of my personal favorites:
#1: EIGHTEEN GIRLS SIGNED UP TO PLAY BASKETBALL!
#2: THE VARSITY GIRLS WON SEVEN GAMES!
#3: THE BADGERS HOSTED THE FIRST EVER TANDEM JV GIRLS GAME!
#4: TANDEM ADVANCED TO THE SEMI-FINALS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN EIGHT SEASONS!
Congratulations to this extraordinary team! Thank you to our incredible coaches, Reggie and Destiny, who did an amazing job helping this squad to reach the highest heights! Cheers to the Emory, an absolute shark! Emory is the MVM (Most Valuable Manager) and was locked in on the sideline, resulting in TWO book-related technical fouls. Nothing gets by Emory! I appreciate you!
Thank you to our Seniors, Maeve and Julia, who brought wonderful energy and leadership. To the juniors - Maya, Juli, Elisabeth, Nina, Madeline, Ginger and Catriona - you have been through it all - and what a journey it has been! You brought it this season, and I can't wait to see how you cap it off! And to our incredibly talented 9th Graders - Aoife, Annie, Nieve, Marilyn, Sophie, Leelee and Alice - wow! You have changed the trajectory of our program! And it didn't hurt to add 8th grader Hadley halfway through the season either! ;)
Congratulations on a special season, Girls Varsity Badgers! I am so proud of you.
