Week #32 - Inaugural Tandem Middle School Dash on the Grass Was an Absolute Blast!

At Tandem Friends School, we teach our students to use all of the resources available to them, to be flexible and creative, and to give back to their community. The Inaugural Tandem Middle School Dash on the Grass was a tremendous example of those concepts. This event was about more than thinking outside the box - our student athletes created their own shape today - a 312-meter loop around the field! Over 80 athletes from three schools had the opportunity to try new events today - throw a shot put, run a relay, or even do a standing broad jump! There were lots of photo finishes, personal records, and tremendous teamwork this afternoon for our Badgers, who welcomed and competed hard against Peabody and Charlottesville Catholic!

The event began with an exciting 100 Meter Dash, where Ellie dusted the field and won her heat in a blazing time of 15.5 seconds! Cora won her heat as well, finishing ahead of her competition in 16.2 seconds! Sage and Aggie, making their debuts in the event, each ran 17.1! On the boys side, Gabriel paced our sprinters, running neck and neck with his opponent. Gabriel finished second in his heat in a time of 13.3 seconds, with William hot on his tail in 14.1. Isaiah pushed himself to the limit, running 15 flat, while Kai and Jayceon came through together at 16.1!
We had three brave athletes attempt the 100 Meter Hurdles. With three obstacles in their way, Robert (17.1), William (18.2) and Eleanor (19.6) cleared each of the hurdles, showing off their ability to get back on the grass and literally hit the ground running! Congratulations on your hurdle PR's!

Ryan made his debut in the mile, and it was incredible. He paced himself like a veteran, with his eyes on the lead pack. Ryan was 30 meters behind them with a lap to go, and he lowered his eyes as he made his final move. Moving up dramatically and challenging the lead pack, Ryan finished third overall in a time of 7:08! Congratulations, Ryan! James broke the tape in 7:33, while Fay continued her distance prowess, establishing a new mile PR in 8:06! This distance trio is serious business!

In the 4x100 Shuttle Relay, our Badgers showed off their ability to work together! The team of Isaiah, Gabriel, William and Eric led the way in 59 seconds - anything under a minute is blazing! Kai, Ryan (only moments after the mile), Jayceon and Robert came through in 1:03, while the girls squad of Ellie, Sage, Cora and Eleanor finished in 1:12!

There was no rest for the weary for either Robert or James. Both athletes took the line yet again - this time for the 400 meters, and Robert showed off an amazing kick, passing three runners in the final 30 meters. Robert finished fourth overall in a time of 1:30 and James was right behind him in 1:37!

In the 200, Gabriel led the way for the Badgers. His time of 32.1 is a blazing fast mark, and he earned it by working closely with Eric and William who both ran 32.2 - breaking the tape at exactly the same time! Jayceon came through in a new PR of 36, while Ellie ran 43 - a busy day for all of our Badger sprinters!

The action did not end there! Our final track event featured the 4xLap race, and it was exciting! Robert, Isaiah, Gabriel and James - none of whom originally planned to do the event but stepped up at the last second - ran a beautiful relay - finishing right in the mix in their super competitive heat in 4:20!

In the throwing circle, the Badgers had 6 athletes throw the heavy shot put! Jayceon finished 2nd out of over 20 competitors! His throw of 23'2" earned him silver for the day! Elias and Cora, both throwing for the first time, threw 20'5" and 20'3" respectively, breaking the 20' mark! Isaiah launched the shot 19'7.5", establishing a new PR! Robert, our most experienced thrower, tossed the shot 16'5" while Eleanor threw 11'1"!

Over in the jumping area, Gabriel's standing broad jump of 8'4" earned second overall, while Jayceon was fifth in 7'9"! Isaiah broke 7' as well, flying 7'3", while Cora and Aggie both broke 5' - 5'11" and 5'6" respectively. Lots of PR's in such a fun, unique event!

An enormous thank you to the entire Tandem Community for their support today in making this first ever Dash on the Grass smooth and special! A particular thank you to our coaches - Coach Julia, Coach Ashley and Coach Melanie - for all of their hard work in preparing our athletes to compete and for assisting with officiating duties. Thank you also to Varsity Coaches Jason, Ned and Melissa who helped to measure and label the track, to Mary for officiating the Broad Jump, and to all of the parents who stepped in to help with the Shot Put! What a great day!

The results are below - only the Tandem results in the Track events but for all of the athletes in the Field events! Lots of PRs for all of the Badgers who stepped up to try lots of events they had never done before - sometimes on just a moment's notice! Well done, Tandem!
